This is the first festival in South Africa that goes beyond artistic films, by accommodating all kind of genres i.e. action, sci-fi etc. We believe that emerging and experienced film makers deserved equal rights to showcase their talent; therefore, this festival is initiated as a platform to give new film makers from KZN/Africa/ all over the world a chance to showcase their films worldwide, while promoting the work of the experienced film makers.

Ugu Film Festival goes virtual due to COVID 19 regulations and precautions and is scheduled to take place from the 22th-25th of October 2020. Several films from Europe, Asian and West are forming line up of our online screenings which will be dominated by South African content.

UGUFF is just around the corner with world class program and line up. It is an event that has grown despite odds over the years, collected several awards ranging from SAFTAs in 2016 as the best sincere development initiative, and the last award is known as Umyezane which was received in March 2018 from Department of Economic Development. The Umyezane is the special  award which is given to Zulu warriors who are brave to rise against all challenges and conquer for the benefit of previously disadvantaged communities! The name is from a traditional special necklace that was given to Zulu heroes after a victory 400 years ago. The founder and chairman of UGUFF, Senzo Zindela, has qualified with flying colours to be honored with this award according to the MEC, Sihle Zikalala.

More details about the history of the film festival was recently shared with The Call Sheet September issue,
